Visitor Issue is the debut print issue of DART, an independent art publication founded in Davis, California in 2023. Across 338 pages and over 30 artists, the issue tried gathers work that lives in a particular emotional register: the uncertainty, vulnerability, strangeness and the strength of visitation, the distance between where you are, where you are from, and where you thought you'd be. Structured as two sides with an interlude, it spans painting, sculpture, cyanotype, ceramics, installation, animation, and film by emerging international artists from California, Asia and beyond.
The issue also records the own history of DART magazine, DART has always been a project of visitors: built by international students, people who arrived somewhere far from home and made something from that distance. This issue is a reflection of that journey, and some of the artists talk about their versions of visitors as well. And in reading it, you become one too.
“The visitor, as an identity, as a state of being, feels more urgent than ever. In a world that is rapidly deciding, criticizing who belongs where, and what it means to arrive somewhere new, we hope this issue offers a quieter kind of answer, not a stance, but a story. In that spirit, we offer you a timely reminder that every place worth loving was first seen through the eyes of a visitor.” - Editor’s Message
