离岛(Outlying Island) by Shiyu Chen

Intro

Shiyu's painting evokes a sense of uncertainty and solitude, particularly relevant to the experiences of young people today. 离岛(Outlying Island) portrays life's ambiguity, where emotions can be felt but not fully understood.

From the Artist

“这个系列是关于困境、环境、紧张、无力等成长问题的创作。 我们都是一座离岛,却又困在同一座孤岛。“

“This series is a work of difficulties, environment, tension, powerlessness, and other growth issues. We are all an island, but trapped in the same island.”

Shiyu Chen really wanted us to think and feel when we look at their artwork, inviting viewers to witness characters ensconced in solitude and vulnerability among the youth nowadays.

Shiyu paints scenes that make us imagine characters who are by themselves and seem unsure about what to do. It's like Shiyu’s telling us it's normal to sometimes feel uncertain and lost, especially when we're young and trying to figure out our place in the world.

To express this idea, Shiyu employs a nuanced palette, suffused with shades of gray, to imbue the composition with an abstract quality. It's like they're trying to show us how life can sometimes feel foggy and unclear, viewers are enveloped in a poignant ambiance, akin to a somber introspection, wherein emotions stir without clear articulation, just like you can’t point out a finger why.

By naming the work as 离岛(Outlying Island), Shiyu likely intends to evoke a sense of being distant or separated from the mainstream. The term "outlying" implies a location that is on the margin, removed from the central hub of activity. This isolation could be both physical and metaphorical, symbolizing feelings of being disconnected or alienated from society. The notion of an island further emphasizes this sense of seclusion, as islands are often seen as isolated and solitary places.

Shiyu’s 离岛(Outlying Island) invites us to pause and reflect on the complexities of being human. Perhaps we're not alone in our struggles to understand in this puzzle called life.

点点滴滴(The Little) by Shiyu Chen

Intro

With Shiyu’s grandmother's retirement, the clinic's legacy lives on through family members, preserving cherished memories in the changing tides of time.

From the Artist

“外婆开诊所,从小就在诊所的环境里长大,形形色色的打点滴的人已经见怪不怪了,正是因为这样,从小我打针也不哭,摔倒了破皮了也不哭,因为伤痛好像很平常。 创作这三幅坐着、躺着、趴着打点滴的创作也是早就在脑海中挥之不去的画面。 而现在,外婆退休了,小姨和舅妈继承着这让我们一家人都难以忘怀的地方“

“My grandma once ran a clinic, therefor I grew up in a clinic environment, all kinds of bit are already inured to the weird, because of that, since childhood I also don't cry, needles, or wounds, because the pain seems to be so common there.

The creation of these three paintings of sitting, lying, and lying on the stomach is also a picture that has long been lingering in my mind. Now that my grandmother has retired, my aunts have inherited this place with memories for our family.”
